To: Our Friends, Community and Government Officials, Customers and Suppliers
RE: EARTHQUAKE IN JAPAN
I would like to take this opportunity to inform you about what I know concerning the tragedy that affected Japan last Friday.
First of all, Nisshin Steel in Japan and Wheeling-Nisshin sincerely appreciate your deepest concerns with regards to the biggest earthquake in the modern history of Japan and the tsunami which devastated the Northeast shoreline. It is said to be the worst tragedy since World War II. More than 400,000 people have been forced to evacuate their homes without life lines (no electricity, phones, water) and about 3,000 people are still missing.
Our thoughts and prayers are with those people who have been affected by this tragedy.
According to the first message from our head office in Tokyo, there are no missing employees at Nisshin’s Sendai Branch Office located at the center of the earthquake. However, we are told that there has been some damage to our Ichikawa Plant which is located near Tokyo. The Ichikawa Plant is one of the coating facilities which is similar to Wheeling-Nisshin. Since other Nisshin Steel facilities are located mainly in the Southern part of Japan, Nisshin has minimal damage if you compare it to those mills such as Nippon Steel, JFE Steel and Sumitomo Metals which have major facilities located in the Northeast part of Tokyo.
As far as our colleagues at Nisshin Steel in Tokyo, they are working under very inconvenient conditions due to the allocation of electricity which has been caused by the trouble at the nuclear power station in Fukushima Prefecture. Many train lines are completely shut down and the number of commuter trains have been limited in the Tokyo Metropolitan area. However, our colleagues feel so fortunate compared to those who lost their lives and people who are struggling to survive under darkness and cold weather.
I will inform you if we receive more news from Japan. Again, thank you for your kind thoughts to Nisshin Steel and Wheeling-Nisshin during this horrific time.
We continue to pray for those victims and their families of this tragic event.
Sincerely yours,
Noboru “Ricky” Onishi
President and CEO
